One win and one draw in the last seven games. Two points above relegation. Out of both cups. The season took a turn for the worse on Thursday night in Foxford as the visitors were comprehensively beaten by the runaway Premier Division leaders. The defeat was as emphatic as the scoreline suggests, if not more so, but perhaps the most optimistic aspect of the rout was that it cannot get any worse for the Deelsiders now. With only the league to concentrate on and against opposition less formidable than the opponents on this night the Crossmolina men can be assured of acquitting themselves better for the remainder of the campaign.

ON a calm Thursday evening in Foxford, S&F United recorded an impressive Tuohy Cup win against Crossmolina. The conditions in the first half were perfect for free flowing football with a dry surface and little or no breeze. In the first quarter S&F exerted great amounts of pressure on the Crossmolina defence. After 25 minutes they had chances from no less than six corners and came close to breaking the deadlock with shots from John Jordan, Michael Costello and Alan McDonnell. Even with S&F’s midfield on top and their strikers looking dangerous, the first clear-cut chance fell to Crossmolina’s Stewart Griffin. After some nice interplay between Kenny Corcoran and Michael Timlin, Stewart Griffin was put one on one with S&F goalkeeper Gary Byrne, but the former’s shot was saved to the relief of the home support. Despite some sterling defending by the Crossmolina rearguard, S&F broke the deadlock after 30 minutes. Crossmolina’s goalkeeper fluffed his clearance of a long ball from Paul Fitzpatrick and the ball was calmly finished to the net by John Jordan. S&F had more chances when Paul Fitzpatrick hit the crossbar after a rasping strike, and a snapshot from Chris Downey, which was parried away by the Crossmolina goalie. Crossmolina came more into the game after the introduction of Kevin McLoughlin, and the striker had the opportunity to level proceedings after a misunderstanding in the S&F defence, but his shot curled over the crossbar. As the teams retired for half-time the rain started to fall, leaving the surface skiddy and slippery underfoot.

The second half started with no team exerting dominance and both teams fought for midfield supremacy. Eventually S&F got their second goal in the 20th minute with a fine finish from John Jordan after some neat interplay between Sean Walsh and Alan McDonnell. S&F were never to look back after this and controlled the remainder of the game. Both teams made substitutions with Pierce Loftus and Matthew Goldrick coming off the bench for Crossmolina and James Brogan, Sean Johnston and Thomas Guiry all being used by S&F. With John Jordan and Paul Fitzpatrick looking dangerous upfront, Ashley Atkinson and Alan McDonnell pulling the strings at midfield and Michael Costello calling the shots in a well-organised defence, S&F completed the rout with further goals from John Jordan and Paul Fitzpatrick. S&F scored their third goal in the 70th minute when Paul Fitzpatrick beat two defenders and struck the ball to the net. John Jordan scored again to complete his hat-trick after Paul Fitzpatrick dribbled through the Crossmolina defence. Fitzpatrick scored his second and his side’s fifth just before full-time after a creative through ball by John Jordan. Crossmolina had some good performances through Stewart Griffin, Merve Howley and substitute Kevin McLoughlin. S&F can now look forward to the next round after this convincing display.
