Swinford avenged their Tuohy Cup defeat of a few weeks ago with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Abbeytown on Sunday afternoon. The contest was played in blistering heat and the action matched the climate as the early exchanges featured two goalscoring chances in the first two minutes. Crossmolina have struggled all season in front of goal so their spirits would have been lifted when Kevin McLoughlin seized on Michael Timlin’s knockdown in the first minute but the striker dragged his shot wide left. Swinford recovered from the fright in perfect style by scoring with their next attack. Shane Holleran’s kickout cleared Crossmolina’s defence and Gordon Carter poked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. Fortunately for the hosts Michael Cafferty swooped to clear the ball off the line heroically , conceding a corner kick in the process. From that corner Niall Feeny crossed the ball from the right and David Brennan headed past O’Malley for the only goal of the game. |
| That explosive couple of minutes proved to be no prelude to a glut of attacking football as the remainder of the half fizzled out amidst midfield sparring. The second half offered more of the same with goal chances at a premium and the action centring around the midfield area. Neither team had the necessary quality to trouble the opposing netminder although Keith Regan patrolled the right flank manfully for the visitors and Trevor McDonald led their attack well. For the hosts Stewart Griffin was at his mesmeric best but unfortunately his colleagues were rarely operating on his frequency so he toiled in isolation. The only two moments of note during the period belonged to Swinford with Brennan meeting a left wing corner kick with a ferocious header that Anthony Timoney somehow managed to glance onto the crossbar with his head before it rebounded to safety. That occurred after fifty two minutes and it was only in the last minute that the visitors struck again with a solid twenty yard effort from their defender that O’Malley was glad to grab. |
