July 30th 2009 Claremorris 3-1 Crossmolina
Crossmolina visited their bogey ground in Claremorris on Thursday evening and once again returned home empty-handed. The opening exchanges were relatively even with neither team distinguishing itself. Crossmolina has a half chance through a John Duggan volley that sailed over the crossbar from the edge of the box while the hosts appeared comfortable in defence and industrious in attack. Their work ethic was rewarded after twenty minutes when they capitalised on an interminable series of throw-ins on their left flank by cutting through the visitors defence and Martin Conlon slotted the ball into the net. Similar to the previous match in Manulla the Deelsiders couldn’t create much for themselves and the game seemed to centre on the middle of the pitch. Johnny Burke had their only real shot in anger of the half when he bulldozed an effort from near midfield that fizzed just over the crossbar. The second half got off to an excellent start for the Crossmolina men when Mark Loftus capped a fine move with an exquisite left footed strike from the edge of the penalty area that equalised the scores. The contest was much more evenly matched thereafter, although neither side risked being confused with Brazil at any stage. The breakthrough came with just over fifteen minutes remaining when a ball that dropped into the Crossmolina penalty box ignited an almighty session of boot-flailing that would have done any school playground proud. The ball stood steadfast amidst a furious frenzy of kicking being conducted by numerous members of either side. Eventually, a Claremorris leg belonging to Jarlath Varley made the defining connection and the ball emerged unexpectedly from the scrum past a surprised Sean Hiney in goal. Substitute Chris Moyles had the visitors best chance to level the scores again when he received a cross from Duggan on the right but the striker couldn’t get enough purchase on his effort and it was saved. Claremorris secured a third goal in the final minutes to seal the victory and again it was not a sight to behold, particularly from a defensive standpoint. Hiney rushed out of goal to the edge of his box and opened up a world of opportunity behind him. The cross into the penalty area only needed to be slotted home but the Claremorris player procrastinated and Jason Canavan expertly shadowed him out of the danger zone. However, with the threat seemingly snuffed out, he returned the ball into the penalty area from the left flank and with the defence still in disarray Chris McTigue converted the delivery.
Crossmolina - Sean Hiney, Jason Canavan, Johnny Burke, Kenny Canavan, Mark Loftus, Darragh Carroll (Paul Flaherty 60), Paul McGuinness, Mark Howley, Anthony Ruddy, John Duggan (Michael Loftus 78), Eoin Corcoran (Chris Moyles)
