October 11th 2009 Crossmolina 0-4 Westport United B
Crossmolina endured a torrid afternoon in every respect as a season of woe hit possibly it's lowest and most depressing point on Sunday in Abbeytown. Westport United arrived with promotion on their minds and they never looked in danger of losing any ground in that crusade as they eased to victory in the second half. The first half was very even with the majority of play centring around the middle of the pitch. The visitors were able to convert some of their possession into scoring chances while the hosts attacks were usually snuffed out by a veteran Covies defence that was organised throughout. The visitors grabbed an early lead after ten minutes when a corner kick was cleared but a couple of passes later afforded Dermot Mulchrone a look at goal from twenty yards out and his underwhelming shot slithered through the massed penalty area and into the net. The remainder of the half was competitive and engrossing although Westport could have notched a couple of more scores but for some excellent defensive work by the Deelsiders back four. The visitors also had three or four valid penalty claims during the game but, much to their chagrin, none were awarded. The second half began brightly for the home team when some good work by Eoin Corcoran allowed him to cross from the right flank and substitute Steven Canavan executed a superb overhead kick near the edge of the penalty area that just looped over the crossbar. The Westport backlash was swift and decisive. Ger McCreevy pounced on a good save by Mark Fox and lashed the ball into the net near the hour mark. Vinnie O'Malley got a runout too as the visiotrs signalled the gravity of their intent and the ex-Mayo striker latched onto a nice pass from a teammate that sliced open the home defence, leaving the sub with the simple task of slotting it past an exposed Fox in goal. Another sub, James Fahy, got on the scoresheet too as the Covies rounded out the scoring with ten minutes remaining against a gallant Crossmolina team who just could not cope with the quality of their opponents.
